Project details
Starting Point
The public domain is one of humanity's greatest shared resources. Thousands of years of literature, art, philosophy and science, free for anyone to read, use and build upon. Yet for most people, accessing this wealth means navigating grey interfaces and downloading raw, unformatted files.
Public Domain Library was built to change this.
The premise was simple and powerful: celebrate human creativity by making it beautifully available
Solution & Impact
We approached this project as an act of curation as much as design. The logo became a celebration of literature and art itself: a visual emblem of the platform's purpose and its generosity of spirit.
The most distinctive design challenge was building a cover system for a library of thousands of books, many of which had no visual identity of their own. We designed a flexible cover architecture that draws directly from public domain artworks, such as paintings, illustrations, and engravings, giving each title a unique, culturally resonant face. No cover is generated from scratch; every one inherits from the same vast archive the library celebrates.
Typography was chosen with the same philosophy: an open source font that reflects the platform's commitment to openness and accessibility.
The website was designed around a single principle: making access easy. The browsing experience is fast, intuitive and with no unnecessary steps between the visitor and the art.
